The Great Glen Cattle Ranch is an organic hill farm running herds of cattle and sheep, located near to Fort William. HWEnergy completed the installation of a wood chip boiler to heat their 5 bedroom farm house and a 3 bedroom cottage via 230 meters of insulated underground pipe work. The system installed has capacity to cater for plans for a future steading conversion.
The farm purchases small round wood locally around once a year and hires in a contract chipper to create the woodchip fuel. This process results in substantial savings to the farm of around 70% compared with current oil prices. The existing oil fired range cookers were left in place, and as they are pre-heated by the wood chip heating system, ensure some heat is also delivered by the wood chip boiler for cooking.
The VETO wood chip boiler is housed within the farm shed, which also contains the year's supply of wood chip fuel. Once chipped into the shed, the wood chip fuel is then simply loaded into the storage hopper by tractor bucket approximately once a week. As sufficient fuel for the whole year is stored in the shed, the management of the fuel supply chain is kept to an absolute minimum.
HWEnergy undertook the complete design and installation of the system, including the connection to the existing heating system. Pre-insulated underground pipework was used to connect the wood heating system to the existing plant room, where the biomass system interfaces with the existing system via a plate heat exchanger.
Installing the wood chip system has enabled us to heat the farm houses properly without worrying about the oil cost. HWEnergy managed the complete installation for us and maintained an excellent attention to detail throughout.
