For a community-owned business like Mallaig Swimming Pool, the high costs of oil-fired heating combined with rapidly fluctuating prices presents a major challenge to the smooth running of the business. Under a Biomass ESCO (Energy Supply Contract) the swimming pool is able to take advantage of significant savings in heating costs and carbon emissions without needing to find capital funding or budget for maintenance and parts replacement. ESCO contracts provide a low risk solution which means that clients with limited access to capital or who would prefer not to invest, can enjoy the benefits of fuel cost savings, heating bill cost certainty and carbon savings over the longer term.
This is a major initiative for a small Community Pool like Mallaig. We operate on lean budgets and tight margins, so it is doubly rewarding that we have been able to realise a reduction in carbon emissions and increase our energy efficiency but with our eye constantly on costs. The new Biomass System is a great example of how a small business can constantly strive to help the environment and save money. Why wouldn't you do it. and why wouldn't you do it with HWEnergy?

150kW Austrian manufactured biomass boiler in Biomass Heat Cabin.
The high specification 150kW Austrian manufactured biomass boiler and accumulator tanks are provided as part of a biomass heat cabin which is constructed off-site, delivered onto a concrete base and commissioned. Heat is piped to the existing boiler room where the existing oil boilers are retained to provide back up heating in the event that the biomass system is not producing. Fuel is blown into the 40m3 fuel store which is contained within the heat cabin and deliveries take place around once a week during periods of peak demand. As HWEnergy retains ownership of the boiler we are responsible for all servicing, maintenance and parts replacement.
The swimming pool pay a fixed price per kWh for the renewable heat that is provided by the system. This offers considerable cost savings to them and HWEnergy provides performance guarantees which means that if the biomass system does not produce heat the swimming pool still makes savings compare with their oil expenditure.
This biomass ESCO project shows how organisations can reduce their carbon emissions and achieve cost savings without any capital outlay. Other finance options are available.
