Novar Estate extends to 20,000 acres between the River Glass and the River Alness and incorporates farming, fishing, forestry, open hill, traditional country sports, over 150 miles of paths and tracks, a hydroelectic scheme and the first wind farm in the Highlands. The first wood chip boiler HWEnergy installed at the estate provides heating for the Ardtalla building, an 18th century stable square converted to a luxury lodge with reception rooms and nine double suites.
Double the success for wood fuel heating
In December 2008 HWEnergy installed Novar Estate’s second wood chip heating system following on from the success of their first installation in early 1997. The latest installation, based on a Veto 120kW wood chip boiler, heats Novar House, a substantial two storey mansion dating from 1720, previously heated by oil.
Self sufficient, low cost estate heating
The wood chip fuel used at Novar is supplied from the estate’s own sustainably managed timber resources from the Novar-Tulloch sawmill. This adds value to low grade timber produced on the estate and greatly reduces the estate’s heating bills by avoiding the need to buy in expensive heating oil. This arrangement ensures a low and fixed cost for heating, and makes use of otherwise low value timber.
The project is a fine example of how biomass heating for a country estate makes sound financial and sustainable sense.
120kW biomass woodchip solution: boiler with spring agitator fuel out-feeder. On-site constructed boiler room and above ground fuel store (30m3) with sliding roof.
The VETO wood chip boiler is housed in a custom built, timber framed boiler house. The wood chip fuel is fed to the boiler from the fuel store (approx. 30m3 capacity) by spring arm out feeder. The fuel store features a sliding roof to enable re-filling by either front end loader or high lift tipping trailer. HWEnergy undertook the complete design and installation of the system, including the connection to the existing heating system.
Pre-insulated underground pipe-work was used to connect the wood heating system to the existing plant room, where the wood heating system interfaces with the existing system via a plate heat exchanger.
