This is an excellent example of biomass district heating for a housing association. Built in 1986, Queen Elizabeth Court is a sheltered housing scheme in Fettercairn, Aberdeenshire comprising 22 flats in a two storey block building and 4 cottages. In the main building there is a large residents’ lounge and attached kitchen, a laundry, 2 guest bedrooms and a hobbies room.
Previously heated by oil, with some electric heating in the main common room, Castlehill Housing Association were concerned by rising heating costs and wanted to look at a more cost effective and sustainable option but one which would not require any staff maintenance or operation.
HWEnergy proposed a solution which would involve the installation of a 'plug and play' Biomass Heat Cabin with a 199kW biomass boiler fed by wood pellet. Ongoing, fuel, service and maintenance are delivered through a comprehensive Heat Supply contract.
At 199kW the boiler is able to meet the entire annual heat load. It was installed in the 12m x 3.5 m larch clad Heat Cabin off site and delivered ready to be connected to pipe work previously laid by HWEnergy's civils team.
The 'plug and play' aspect of the Heat Cabin meant minimum disruption on site, both to existing landscaping and to the provision of heat to the building. The Biomass Heat Cabin has an integral fuel store capacity of 32 metres cubed which allows approximately 1 delivery a month in winter reducing to a delivery every 2 to 3 months in summer.
Ongoing, HWEnergy supports the biomass installation on a Heat Supply basis, taking care of all service and maintenance and fuel supply and billing the client only for the heat used per kWh. Wood pellets are blown into the Heat Cabin fuel store through a flexible pipe. Our remote monitoring capability ensures we can keep a constant eye on fuel levels.
The fuel store is designed in accordance with industry best practice including provision of ventilation and fire resistance and there is no requirement for any Castlehill Housing Association staff or residents to enter the facility.
"The one-stop shop solution with heat supply was a major influencing factor for us with the guarantee of prices - we were able to say to our residents that we will not have cost fluctuations for the next 3 years which was a major boost after our experience with oil in recent years."
