Located in the picturesque heart of the village of Kingussie in Badenoch, the Duke of Gordon Hotel is a busy 63 bedroom hotel. As a progressive business operating in a competitive marketplace, the hotel was keen to explore the potential for both enhancing sustainability and generating cost savings.
Using biomass fuel energy is the only way forward. We have used gas and oil and those systems are inevitably to go up in price. Using biomass allows for a good green policy and has a serious economic benefit on your pocket.

Working with HWEnergy to develop a business case, the hotel owners, Cairngorm Travel, were able to demonstrate that the installation of a biomass heating system would deliver a significant level of savings.
Solution in practice
The high specification, Austrian manufactured biomass boiler and accumulator tanks have been designed to fit into an existing hotel outbuilding with a fuel store conducted externally. Locally source woodchip fuel is delivered by tractor and high lift trailer approximately once a week and input from hotel staff is kept to a minimum with a comprehensive service and support package provide by HWEnergy.
Spreading warmth throughout the hotel
The availability of cost effective heating has enable the hotel to improve comfort levels in area which the previous heating system struggled to support. The level of carbon and accost savings of the hotel are proving extremely beneficial to the business and the repayment of grant funding support and claiming of the RHU further enhance the financial returns from the project.
